2015 October Platform Challenge: Day 27 – Get Social, again

This came into my inbox: 2015 October Platform Challenge (link). I almost deleted it. Almost. Then the voice on my left shoulder (we’ll call him Muninn) cawed, “You have been wanting to work on this skill as long as I can remember.” Not to be outdone, the voice on my right shoulder, (let’s just say he’s named Huginn) cackled, “I really think you should do this.”

So sleeves up, I am committed to this month of daily challenges! Here goes…

The instructions for today are: “Get Social, again”

I look at Huginn and Muninn, “Okay, tell me in plain English why Twitter is good for me – an author nobody’s heard of.”

“The connection is pretty obvous,” Muninn says, “Blue bird. Ravens. Birds. Mythic messengers. Getting the message out. All the affinity is there if you look for it.”

“I know about the symbolism. But is my being on Twitter merely a symbolic cry into the void?” I counter. “Give me something concrete.”

“You want concrete in this business? Kiss a sidewalk,” Huginn suggests.

“Gee, thanks.” I feel pretty defeated. “Would you like to spatter it with fresh raven droppings first?”

Muninn hops between us, “You really need me to spell it out? Fine. It’s not just about this one day. Or that one Tweet. Or the other single post. This challenge is about the sum of all your days. This challenge is about letting the world get to know you in tantalizing, teasing bits over time.” He eyes me critically, “Give me one word answers to the following questions… Are you committed?”

“Yes”

He nods, “Do you have things to say?”

“Apparently.”

“And,” he ignores my doubt, “do you want to be known for saying them?”

“I…” that catches me off guard. I hadn’t looked at it from a long-view perspective, “Yes?”

He leaps closer to me, giving me a grave stare. “Then this challenge, mortal, is about you being known in the world. You will accomplish that with your words – both spoken and typed – through consistent habits.

The fate-binding hangs powerfully in the air, fettering me to the life I’ve chosen. The awesome moment of revelation shatters when Huginn caws, “What he said!”

Coming down off that high, I realize that I’ll be participating in today’s early #platchal chat on Twitter. Not because I’m convinced today on Twitter will be THE defining moment on my career. Instead, I will participate because I know it’s one more thread added to the life I’m weaving.
