This came into my inbox: 2015 October Platform Challenge (link). I almost deleted it. Almost. Then the voice on my left shoulder (we’ll call him Muninn) cawed, “You have been wanting to work on this skill as long as I can remember.” Not to be outdone, the voice on my right shoulder, (let’s just say he’s named Huginn) cackled, “I really think you should do this.”
So sleeves up, I am committed to this month of daily challenges! Here goes…
2015 October Platform Challenge: Day 13 – Take Part in a Twitter Chat
The instructions for today are: “Take Part in a Twitter Chat”
“CAAAAAHHHHH Caaaahhhh caahhh cahh,” Huginn’s cawing laughter echoes loudly in my head. Seriously. His schadenfreude wears boxing gloves. “Did you see that Muninn? The mortal’s got to do a Twitter chat!”
Though he maintains his air of dignity, a note of glee graces Muninn’s reply, “I seem to recall him stating he’s never been able to trace a single sale to Twitter activity.”
“Guys, this challenge isn’t about sales,” I remind them.
The two immortal birds stare at me. Huginn clears his throat, “What do you think ‘platform’ is?”
It takes a moment for me to collect my thoughts, “It’s about networking with readers and industry professionals. It’s about being accessible and reachable and, if possible, being likable. It’s about self-promotion.”
“Go on,” Muninn encourages.
“Uh… that’s it.”
Huginn gives a ruffled shake of his head, “And why in Helheim do you think you should be doing all that?”
I search for a more altruistic way to say what he’s goading me into admitting. Inspiration hits, “To help more people find my story!”
Muninn looks at me, willing to wait me out like some patient, anthropomorphic, all-the-time-in-the-universe, god-damned Nordic Buddha.
I hate it when he gets like that. I lose a bit of my cool and fess up, “Fine! I’d like readers to fall in love with my work so much that they feel the price of one or two cups of coffee is worth me writing, producing and releasing the next one. There! I admitted it. My runes are on the table. Laid bare. Peck away.”
Softly and sympathetically Muninn asks, “Now can you move forward with a clearer head?”
Huginn chuckle-caws, “You’re totally going to do the Twitter chat this morning, aren’t you?”
“Yes,” I sigh. “I’ll give it a try.”
So I set an alarm for 11:00 am Atlanta, GA time so I can log in to be part of #platchal today and see what a Twitter Chat is all about.
